American Competitiveness

Only two percent of the annual workforce comes from public schools. In order to keep our nation competitive, we must focus on educating today’s workforce. Show legislators how adult education and literacy helps our nation keep its competitive edge.

Research and Reports

Adult Education and Workforce Skills Performance Report
The Adult Education and Workforce Skills Performance Report from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce gauges the ability of education providers to address the long-term workforce needs in Indiana. It focuses largely on education and training at levels below the baccalaureate—and the large number of adults who are left behind and under-prepared for work in this economic environment.

America’s Perfect Storm
A report from ETS's Policy Information Center, America's Perfect Storm: Three Forces Changing Our Nation's Future, looks at the convergence of three powerful socioeconomic forces that are changing our nation's future:

  • substantial disparities in skill levels (reading and math)
  • seismic economic changes (widening wage gaps)
  • sweeping demographic shifts (less education, lower skills)

Reach Higher America: Overcoming Crisis in the U.S. Workforce
Reach Higher, AMERICA: Overcoming Crisis in the U.S. Workforce, calls to revamp the Adult Education and Literacy System. The report calls for the system to effectively serve 20 million adults annually by 2020. It also calls for policymakers to reset the system’s mission to prepare adults for postsecondary education and job training. It recommends how to accomplish this. This resource is useful for advocates who believe that our country must invest in adult education and literacy in order to keep America competitive. The National Commission on Adult Literacy issued this report.
